The Kukuwa Dance Workout is very exciting to me. It keeps you moving and I learned some pretty cool dances at the same time. I dont usually break a sweat, but this Dance Workout changed all of that. I am so glad my friend introduced me to this so a quickly made this puchase. It is worth it. It is something quick and anyone can keep up with it. Trust me, if I can keep up so can you lol.

I usually make up my own cardio dance. I would never take a dance class because I am not good at remembering tricky sequences. This is a nice dance DVD because the moves are so simple and you move right and left and forward and back and shake your hips which is pretty much a no brainer. I also appreciate that you dont need too much space. I like the third dance best and Kukuwa is very encouraging and motivating.I didnt think it was so much like other African Dance. Seems more Latin and I like that because it is better on my back.

I disagree with the reviewer who said the instructor slowed down too much, doing high fives and the frequent interruptions. Everybody knows if you dont want to stop moving, you run in place or jump rope. Or get water or wipe the sweat off your face. Not hard to figure out.

In terms of the workout, cueing could be better, however, it is a DVD and rewind is always an option. It is presupposed with ownership of the DVD that you will do this more than once and, therefore, you will pick up the moves.

This DVD dovetails nicely with other types of dance instruction, including W. African and Latin/Caribbean. I like the music. It is really one heck of a workout....sweat, sweat, sweat, and the movement IS constant. She does a good job of addressing the core with fun moves that dont really feel like hard work until you wake up the next day.

I have an excellent W. dance background (ballet mostly) and find this to be a very challenging routine, have done it more than half a dozen times and am still mastering the moves for segment one. This is exactly what I need to keep it fun and challenging. However, I also take W. African dance twice a week in my local community, as well as samba, so maybe this tape will not resonate with folks who arent into the moves or music of Africa.

I really enjoy this dvd. The music encourages you to keeping moving. The dances are pretty easy to catch on and Im not a great dancer. The first time I used the dvd, I was sweating in the inside of my elbows! And it was just the warmup. Worth the investment!

All I can say is wow!!! I did read some reviews before purchasing this dvd but you know what you have to experience doing the movements yourself and give your own review. I love this dvd!!! I did take some african dance classes when I was young. So I did recognize some of the movements and let me tell you I was looking for something I could sweat to and believe me when I say I have found it. This dvd is fun and will get you to sweating from the warm into the dances. I am glad I brought it and will be working out to it every chance I get.

I love watching African dance and thought that this would be a great way to learn some of the moves and get a good workout at the same time.

Im sure this is a wonderful DVD for those who have done African dance before or who pick up dance steps REALLY quickly. My problem was that the insructor would demonstrate the step very briefly, launch into the move at full speed, and then go on to the next step without much opportunity for the student to practice. I need to do a new step 3-4 times before Im ready to tackle the next one. The pace was lightening speed which is too bad because the moves are beautiful.

Although I was afraid this would be easy because of the title "African Grace" I quickly discoverd that this DVD is very invigorating workout. (I thought is would be graceful and flowing) I have completed it three times so far and I sweat!
I appreciate the encouraging, clear instructions and the fact that the actual cardio workout is longer than 30 minutes (about 45 minutes total cardio with a 5 minutes warm-up and cool-down) If you want to work out for the 30 minutes, there is a break at about that point so that you can skip the second cardio section and go straight to cool down.
The moves are adv. beg to intermediate because of the steps and rhythms, but nothing to difficult that cant be mastered after a few plays.

I had high hopes for the African Grace: A West African Dance For Cardio Fitness DVD. Im afraid I have been spoiled by the high quality instructions in some other dance DVDs (e.g., Crunch - Cardio Salsa by Giselle Roque de Escobar, Brazilian Dance Workout with Vanessa Issac).

Although the actual West African dance is beautiful, I had a hard time following the instructions. Some of my favorite dance DVDs first demonstrate a new step in full-tempo, then the viewer is asked to dance along to the new step in half-tempo, then full-tempo, then transitioned with the previous step, before dancing to everything learned up to that point. Other favorite DVDs have you repeat a step 8 times, then 4 times, then 2 times, then 1 time in order to get it. There were only a few steps in the African Grace DVD that offered such helpful instruction.

Another problem with the African Grace DVD was the costumes. Although the pants worn were attractive, their bagginess made it difficult for me to interpret what the instructor and other dancers were actually doing with their legs.

I would consider buying a version 2 of this same DVD if the instructions were improved, but could not recommend it as is.

The warm up was not very sufficient

Just thought Id share my two cents here, I thought the video was great but what she said was the warm up section should have been much slower. It felt like I was jumping right into the faster aerobics portion. Muscles need time to be warmed up, stretched, etc., before jumping into fast paced work. I liked Debra and her helpers, and the dance is fun and great exercise. The only problem I had was that the warm up should have been more of a warm up.

Modern Ghanaian women suffer daily sacrifices, lifelong barriers to their advancement, and an emerging modernity which has multiplied their duties but not simplified their lives. Changes focuses on a three year period in the lives of Esi Sekyi, Opokuya Dakwa, and Fusena Kondey, three women approaching their mid thirties in Accra, Ghana.
In Changes we can see the evidence of a complex struggle in the name of modernity between African women and society, families, traditions, and their own desires. From the perspectives of Esi, Opokuya, and Fusena, Aidoo shows us how such modern African women view their lives, and with what methods they are willing to fight to improve their lives.
Esi, Opokuya, and to a lesser degree the much-suppressed Fusena, fight against more than just an accumulation of oppressive tradition that favors men. They struggle for appreciation of their talents and for an equal part in guiding their marriages. Esi and Opokuya struggle to build marriages and relationships that allow them to reap their benefits of their individuality and their educations, and exercise their own free wills, without making them overworked, or being labeled mad women and witches. The reaction of their families, husbands and communities to these women reveal modern dilemmas for educated African women.

Aidoos love story traces Esis distinctly rebellious and independent path to love and marriage, as contrasted to the more traditional married lives of Opokuya and Fusena. in doing so, the novel illustrates women challenging a postcolonial African society on all fronts. This front is as diverse as the workplace, in hotel bars, in the kitchen, on the road driving alone in their new cars, in the rural traditional village, and in the bedroom. Despite often finding that lonely independence is untenable, Esi and Opokuya achieve moderate success in their fight. Their resiliency indicates shifting gender roles in Africa, and some compatibility between tradition and these new roles.

I give this book 5 stars because ot is an extremely rich story told frankly and believably. The material even seems politically important (perhaps all novels should try to be so?) in that it addresses real problems facing Africa and does not always provide answers, although it certainly proveds a rich cast of characters attempting to do so.

Ama Ata Aidoos second novel is the story of a woman discovering herself - trying unsuccessfully to balance her need for independence with her need for attention and love within the constraints of Ghanaian culture.

What she finds is that Ghanaian culture is wise "Esi, why do you think they took so much trouble with a girl on her wedding day?... She was made much of, because the whole ceremony was a funeral of the self that could have been."

Changes - the love story Ama Ata Aidoo professed she would never write - conveys the clutter of the zongo, the frustrations of working life in Accra, and the disillusionment of love. Peppered with the uncanny wisecracks of African culture: on love "when we have to count pennies for food for our stomachs... love is nothing", on hypocrisy "How can anyone go about, eating the heads of cows, and still maintain that he is afraid of eyes?" Changes is a delightful trance. One of those pleasures that is indefinable but defining.

It is written without fuss in the language that Ghanaians call English - adapted to suit the whims and imaginings of the local mind. Ama Ata Aidoo flows with ease, occasionally returning (for effect) to the drama format with which she is unquestionably comfortable.

I read this book in two days! This was a love story but much more. It was a well-written, fascinating book with an ending that I couldnt have predicted. I read somewhere that Ata Ama Aidoo was hesitant to write a love story, well Im glad she did. Ive recommended it to all of my friends!
